Diagnosing Development Level and Finding the Match / PW pp. 27-28

These exercises are found on pages 27-18 in your Participant's Workbook.  Read each situation and determine the goal or task, then diagnose the development level, and choose the best leadership style response.

Take special note of the diagrammed diagnosis model provided on page 27.  Consider the concepts it represents as your cultivate your own skills in diagnosing development level.  "Decision Point 1" is completed by looking to the right or the left of the diagram, i.e. "is it a question of learning or a question of doing" (competence as opposed to commitment).  "Decision Point 2" is completed by asking, "is the follower's attitude positive or negative (one of enthusiasm or discouragement)?"
You can look at the SLII model in a comparable way, right quadrants suggest the leader needs to focus on follower "learning," left quadrants suggest focus on followers' "doing;" top quadrants suggest "support" to overcome follower discouragement, bottom quadrants suggest "less support" in the face of the follower's enthusiasm.
