Leadership Style Flexibility // Participant Workbook Pages 15 – 21

Answers for Situation 3 (This one we usually do in class, unless time doesn’t allow).

The Answers down the left column of the page go in this order:

D      S       S       S       D       D       S       D     S

Note that a lot of people think Andy’s comment, “Lee, do you understand the importance of the fact that rejections in your area are up by 10 percent?”, is a Directing-style comment. It is, if Andy’s comment isn’t really a question. But if Andy is being sincere in his comments, then he actually asks the question in an effort to gauge Lee’s understanding, rather than try to indirectly make a point. As a general practice, speaking plainly and meaning what you really say is a preferred leadership approach to be used whenever possible.

The written responses at the bottom of the page are fairly self-evident, if your analysis of the “Directive” and “Supportive” statements generally agreed with the answers above. But, just in case, here they are:

1.  Were most of Andy’s comments directive or supportive?       BOTH DIRECTIVE AND SUPPORTIVE

2. Who talked more?        ANDY

3. What leadership style was Andy using with Lee?      STYLE 2 – COACHING
