Situation 1

Development Level: Diagnosis—D2: The employee lacks skill and experience with wireless systems. Her competence in this area is low. Due to fear, lack of interest, or for whatever reason, she is not motivated to learn how to use the new system. Thus, her commitment to the task is low. It appears that she is at the D2 level of development, in need of an S2 (Coaching) style of leadership.

The leader action described here is a MATCH.

Rationale – This Style 2 (Coaching) approach is a good choice. It addresses the employee’s need to understand the benefits and techniques of working with the new system, as well as her concerns about working with the wireless system. Whether her concerns are based on fear or lack of interest, the Style 2 (Coaching) approach provides the support she needs to overcome her commitment problem.
